Back to School Memories

Do you remember when .........?

Read the blog for the whole story

Back to School Memories

Country-school-1950_edited-1
Everyone seems to be buying school supplies - Binders being high on the list. Stickers are still fun too.

Parents are all rushing around buying school supplies for kids returning to school in a couple of weeks.

Many of the items they are buying are high tech expensive gadgets.

Do you remember when .........

We rode to school on our bikes in the fall and spring and walked the 3 or more miles.in the winter. We were never driven.  That luxury was for sissies.

This time of the year takes me back to the days when school supplies meant 2 new pencils with new erasers.  A new scribbler for each subject. If we were old enough to be allowed to use ink then we recieved a new nib for our pen. I remember being excited to get my first new pen with a nib.

We always started school with a "good solid" pair of oxford shoes with a little lecture to take care of them as they have to last!

Yes, I've had to learn to become a Grandmother for the 21st Century - read my journey to becoming a High Tech Grandma with all the gadgets too.

Our Dream Cookbook and How to Write it

Why Revive the Rain Barrel?

Do You Recycle The Rain?

Seniors sharing their 'rain-barrel' memories:
The most common reaction when I asked about their 'rain-barrel' memories was: "Yes, we always had a rain barrel and the water was used to water our plants and to wash our hair. We loved using rain water to wash our hair because it left our hair so shiny and silky!" Then I talked to Jean and she had a story where rain collected into multiple rain barrels was a matter of survival. She grew up in a small prairie town in SW Manitoba during the 1930's.. The town did not have any drinking water. They had to walk a quarter of a mile to a place that had a pump with good water and pack it in buckets to their home. That water was very precious so it was only used for drinking and for cooking food. for the rest of their water needs they relied on the rain they could collect in their rain barrels. Not a drop of water was ever wasted.

Do we appreciate what a precious gift we have in water? What are we doing to recycle the rain?

January is List making Month

Where does the term "kick the bucket" originate?

To kick the bucket is an English idiom that is defined as "to die" in the Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue (1785). It is considered a euphemistic, informal, or slang term.Oxford Advanced Dictionary of Current English, 4th Ed. (1989) Its origin remains unclear, though there have been several theories.

I am over 70 and working on my Bucket List gave me energy and determination to NOT kick the bucket - I have too much to do!

I have already started on my list:

Have you started yours yet?
