Is anyone interested in joining me on take "A Photo A Day to End Women's Cancer" starting Jan 1 2010?

Update 2015 - the marathon was a success but in 2012 my daughterinlaw passed away.
Keep fighting cancer!

A marathon has been my dream.  Photography has been my dream.

Why don't I combine the two of them to fit my physical and financial limitations?

I would like to take a new photograph every day for the entire year of 2010.  Just pictures of everyday life for 2010. Like a picture diary.
Due to various health issues I have to deal with every day the physical challenge will be in 'taking photographs everyday" while at the same time it is within what I should be able to do if I push the envelope a little.
My digital camera makes it possible for me to to take on this project because the only cost will be a few batteries.

You can join me on this Photo a Day by going to RedGage where I will be posting my pictures Starting date is Jan 1, 2010..  It is free to join.  RedGage to an easy place to share your photographs plus they pay you for your content.  If you would like to join me on this marathon - sign up and leave a message on my wall.

Most marathons are run for a charity.  So I would like this marathon to have the same purpose.  My charity will be "A Photo A Day to End Women's Cancer"  If you donate from the Photo A Day to End Women's Cancer group - On the donation page please type in from Photo a Day

My daughter-inlaw fought the long battle of breast cancer this past year and happily is a survivor.  She has registered to run in the Weekend to End All Women's Cancer August 2010.  You can donate directly to The Weekend to End Women's Cancer
Debra's team is called Bucks for Busts.

Join RedGage now - and start taking pictures Jan. 1, 2010

The Great Depression Era - 1930's

This property (in Canada) was my grandparents original family homestead in the wilderness as it looked during the depression era of the thirties.

I remember visiting my grandparents cabin often! It was always homey and full of love.  Often my grandmother was taking homemade bread from the oven when we arrived. Of course they made their own butter and we were quickly offered a slice of warm bread with this wonderful fresh butter. When a home is full of love you never feel poor. As kids, we never knew our family was poor and struggling with bad economic times."

A Bee's Eye View of a Daylily

Stamens of a daylily (Hemerocallis), thickly covered in pollen

When a honey bee buzzes from flower to flower, it collects more than just nectar. Pollen sticks to its hairy body and hind legs. The bee brushes this pollen into "baskets," or sacs, on its hind legs. Later, when the bee returns to the hive, it kicks off the pollen into cells in the hive. Honey bees use this pollen as food.

Ladybugs are Good Bugs - Now you can buy Live Ladybugs!

When released at sundown (because they don't fly at night), ladybugs eat aphids, mealy bugs, scale, leaf hoppers, and other destructive pests. And they keep on eating until the bad guys are gone, laying their own eggs in the process. When new pests arrive, fresh ladybugs will be waiting. You will love them because ladybugs really work, plus they will be doing something favorable for the environment. LADYBUGS (Hippodamia convergens) USE: Ladybugs prefer to eat aphids and will devour up to 50 a day, but they will also attack scale, mealy bugs, boil worm, leaf hopper, and corn ear worm. They dine only on insects and do not harm vegetation in any way.

45,000 Ladybugs have been purchased from this site in the past 6 months!  Live LadyBugs!

Let's Go to the Lake!

Let's Go to the Lake!

Our favorite summertime words were "Let's go to the lake!" I miss those days when going to the lake was synonymous with summer. It didn't matter which lake we went too. Living in British Columbia we have many so it is just a matter of how much time we had. For a quick dip after a hot day at work or for a two week vacation or maybe a long weekend camping trip. The words were the same "Let's go to the Lake!"

From Stuart Lake to Takla Lake on the inland highway of only water.

We travelled with one large river boat to carry our camping supplies and fuel for the outboard motors for 2 boats - the riverboat and one little fast boat that my brother uses to water ski. 5 of us in the wilderness on a 4 day camping trip. We put our boats in the water at Stuart Lake and travelled to Takla Lake where we set up camp on a beach. We made our mattresses from carefully placed spruce boughs and the first night we were invaded by a black army of spiders. They loved the freshly cut spruce too. We changed our place to sleep and then the next night they were gone. No other wild critters bothered us the whole trip and we certainly caught our limit of fish from these pristine lakes. See our route on the map - Stuart Lake to Takla Lake which included traveling the treacherous rivers where we had to stop and do some repairs from hitting a rock that was just under the fast water.
When our two son's were old enough to make the trip with us - we went again. By this time someone had built some wilderness A-frame cabins - so we could 'camp' with a little more security.
The words, "let's go the Lake!" brings back a book full of memories.

Lost in the World of Fifties Movies

We have a small theatre at the senior's residence where I live and our Recreation Director has agreed to a "Fifties Movie" day once a week for the month of April and I volunteered to research and find the movies which has resulted in me being "lost" in the world of movies for the past few days.
I went to the movies fairly regular ( at least weekly) during the fifties but BOY! did I miss a lot of great movies! How many have you seen?

I couldn't help but create a Movie Catalogue lens to keep track of all these wonderful 'oldies'. Stop by and tell me your favorite movie from the 1950's era.

15,000 people reading "Help! Everyone is Dying!" by GramaBarb

I wrote my story of the 1980's on Story of my Life and as of today I have had 15,000 views and counting. The title of the story is "Help! Everyone is Dying!" Please read it and leave your comment. I've linked to my Squidoo lens A Grandmother's Love and yes it is doing well too.

The special Featured Story written about me is doing phenomenal with over 130,000 views. The title of the story by Tamar Burris is "GramaBarb: A Grandmother for the 21st Century"

These stories are about me as a Grandmother and are validated through my passions of life on my 170 Squidoo lenses. I don't promote Squidoo on SOML but my life passions as they are featured on my lenses - they meld naturally together.

The point of this blog is? If you are not getting over 100,000 views maybe you need to take a step back and widen out your vision.

I have been Featured on Story of My Life

"GramaBarb: A Grandmother for the 21st Century"

is the title of the article that Story of My Life writer, Tamar Burris, used when she wrote this article about my life as a grandmother. The article highlights my passion for sharing family Genealogy with my grandchildren and the need for Grandparents to be active computer and internet users with their grandchildren. Plus we can share our creativity with our family through the use of Zazzle and Cafepress.

Thanks to Story of My Life for featuring my story.

Beyond the Politics - meet First Grandma

Jan. 20/09 - Beyond the politics of the day I was thrilled to see family working together by including extended family. It brought tears to my eyes when I heard the words "Grandma Marian Robinson will be moving into the White House with her family!" Just stop and reflect on the importance of that example to the world. Here is a family that practices what it preaches. Grass root values in action and 2 very happy granddaughters because they will not have a stranger looking after them when Dad and Mom are away but they will have their beloved Grandma with them. Watch this video I found about Grandma Marian Robinson. It will warm your heart that she is living in the White House. Please meet First Grandma Marian Robinson and listen to what she has to say.

Do All the Good You Can,

On the A Grandmother's Love lens there is a poster that has a wonderful quotation starting with the words "Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can," - Isn't that a great theme for 2009?!

Are you a grandmother? I would love to hear from you. Tell us the good you do in your family and community.

Do you always make family and friends feel welcome? Do you always have time to listen? Does your door freely swing in?

Let's visit Grandma's Kitchen for some fresh baked bread and a warm visit often in 2009.
